I really dig novel uses of display technology like Skot Croshere’s DigitGrid. It uses 517 seven-segment displays controlled by a Xilinx Spartan 3E FPGA to play animations. Skot fully documented the build and even posted the schematics, PCB layout, and code. His future plans for the project include adding more digits, computer-free playback, and an interactive mode. 1. With a little work I’d think this would be able to display grey scale (red scale?) live video. Seems like a fun project.

    trkemp,

I would love to do redscale. It didn’t make it into this first version in an effort to keep the cost and complexity down. It’s definitely on the list for a new version; i think it would look awesome!
