Gordon Vizecky of Minneapolis, MN, machined this ice sphere mold in his shop as his first lathe project. Gordon’s video shows all the steps he went through to grind out the hemispheres.

Though my fit and finish were sub-par compared to this project, I’ve done similar lathe operations to make graphite and aluminum marble presses for hot glass. For those who don’t have access to a lathe: a core box router bit can be slowly plunged into aluminum, with either a drill press or router, to make nice hemispherical pockets.

    Very nice.
Where did you get the aluminum to start with and what was the cost?
    Thanks!
