Medicine in the US is broken. We face a shortage of doctors, looming medical costs, and an average lifespan that doesn’t look all that great compared to other countries.
Government isn’t fixing the problem. Neither is industry. And patient empowerment is happening way too slowly. It’s time to hack the system!

Hence, MedHack, an open health hackathon, August 10th and 11th, in Palo Alto, CA. Learn more and register at medhack.prebacked.com

I must say that the information on the Medhack link is pretty spare. It would be nice to have a little more information before committing. I guess it’s really just meant for the Bay Area Cognitariat. If I have to ask, I’m probably not qualified to participate huh?
Hi Erik – organizer here. I agree, it is a bit sparse. I appreciate the comment and have been adding and adjusting content since your post. Feel free to contact me at garrett at prebacked.com if you still need more info.
I would like to know more what to expect in the event. I am an electrical engineer and would like to participate. Do you expect hardware hacks and build a prototype in 22 hours and do we bring our own tools? Is it a contest? What will you do with idea/hack?
Mahesh–it will be a friendly competition based on each team’s final presentation. Some of the judging criteria: you’ve demonstrated work in the past day and your idea, as presented, seems do-able. (For me, thinking outside the box gets bonus points
)
The expectation is that you will do what you think you can in 22 hours. In my experience, some people design hardware in CAD (some even started the patent process), some do a demo-only website, some do an art project. It is really up to you and the strengths of your team to decide which aspect you pursue.
Would you guys also throw some problem statements in the bio-medical domain and then the engineers take on from there? Or would it be like make anything bio-med by asking your doctor buddy for present challenges and propose a design?
