we are not in the restricted border zone. we have private property, which is just like owning land anywhere else.

as much as I’d like to, there isn’t a way to “renounce paying US taxes” whether you live in the US or not. If you are a US citizen, you have to pay US taxes, period.

It seems as though foreigners now can own land in Mexico. There is an odd caveat if the property is within 100km of an international border or 50km of the coast that the land be held in a bank trust which title-holder is beneficiary of. These trusts are over 50 year terms though the details are unclear.

These restrictions do not seem to exist for property outside these “restricted zones.”
It’s my guess that it gives the Mexican an easy way to force you to sell that property to anyone they think will make them more money from it, as with outsourced industry along the US border…nice.

(Hopefully they don’t make you sell to the regional honcho’s brother at too big a loss.)

I’m guessing this homestead is elsewhere.

Well the land is the most interesting, since they are living in Mexico, they can’t actually own the land they are building on. Mexico doesn’t allow foreign citizens to own land in Mexico and I doubt that they renounced their US citizenship (though I suspect they did renounce paying US taxes)…

we use satellite internet, which is not ideal, but it’s the only access to internet we have. It is not that expensive, at about $70/month.

My “nagging question” about the homestead/article is: Since the homestead is described as “off the grid” how do Abe and Josie gain access to what they describe as one of their most important tools; the internet? I know for myself, I have a small cottage in the northern portion of Michigan’s lower peninsula, and while I have ready access to the electric grid, and even natural gas if i wanted it, access to the internet is limited to very expensive satellite services.
