Open Source Hardware, Workshops and Summits

We here at MAKE are really excited about Thursday’s Open Hardware Summit at EyeBeam in NYC. The OHS is always an inspiring event, and a perfect lead-in to World Maker Faire. We had a hardware pow-wow of our own this year, prior to Maker Faire Bay Area in May. It was an amazing event, with a who’s who of speakers in the open source world. The assembled talked about the import of open source hardware as a potential engine of innovation and new manufacturing model. At the Workshop, we saw firsthand the power of one of these events in galvanizing a community.

You can learn more about our Hardware Innovation Workshop here. On the Speakers page, you can scroll down the list, read speakers’ bios, watch the videos of their talks, and then visit their websites.

This year’s Open Hardware Summit has a fantastic roster of speakers. There are also some especially fun talks, like MAKE’s very own kid contributors, Super Awesome Sylvia and Joey Hudy, talking about kids and open source, Jim Burke presenting on the Power Racing Series, and Erin Kennedy, aka RobotGrrl, on sharing inspiration through the development of robot kits. With all of the discussion and soul-searching going on recently about MakerBot and open source 3D printing (Bre will be speaking in the afternoon session, BTW), there should be some great, hopefully productive conversations about how open source can operate in a more aggressive marketplace.

I, Brian Jepson, Shawn Wallace, Sean Ragan, Stett Holbrook, Phil Torrone, and other MAKE staffers will be covering the event. In the morning session, MAKE founder and publisher Dale Dougherty will be speaking about the business of naming things.

We hope to see you there! And check back here over the next few days for OHS coverage.
