  2. I put together a single box before I went to the NYC maker faire that had all the tools I would need to fix my power wheels racer. If you re like me and need to carry a fairly large “essential” kit, then these boxes (http://www.harborfreight.com/18-x-13-x-6-aluminum-case-69315.html) are great. They come full of diced foam so all the tools are padded in their own dedicated space.

  3. David – great post. We need to get you a Maker’s Notebook for your bag… think the reference materials could also come in handy!

  4. I don’t have bag as such but a small kit that I bring when I’m heading for my local hacker space http://nisker.net/projects/mini-electronics-toolstorage-box/

  5. As a university student, I spend a lot of time travelling and going to robotics competitions and this kind of thing always comes up.

Normally a week before we travel I make a list of every tool I touch so I can throw them all in a box. I’ve been meaning to make a more permanent set of portable tools.

I did this a while back for my RC gear, was very quick with a laser cutter:

I hope to buy a few mezzi XXT cases off ebay and do the same for my entire set of tools.

I’ve found the biggest PITA when hacking on the go is finding wall power. It isn’t practical to have a full set of cordless tools so I’ve been thinking about gluing a large LiFe to an Inverter.

  6. Mine has soldering iron, solder, solder wick, etc, and ~300 LEDs, few hundred various resistors, couple arduinos, ac adaptor, power jacks, usb to serial adaptor, avrasp, and an assortment of buttons. Basically a good assortment of the basics.

  7. …this Maker Bag, and the projects associated with the gadgets it contains, could be an invaluable educational opportunity.
