In tandem with their new single, Swedish band Shout Out Louds released a very limited edition of ten box sets. In each set is a kit that shows the user how to make their own phonograph record of the single out of ice. The track is appropriately called “Blue Ice.”

The box set appears to contain a silicone mold that has the record negative imprinted on the bottom. The user fills the mold with water and places it in the freezer for six hours. Once solidified, the frozen cylinder can be played on a conventional record player.

The sound is a bit warbly due to the record not being quite level, and it skips here and there. Other than that, the playback is completely recognizable. What releases on alternative media can we expect next?

  1. This is why I miss records so much…
I remember when they used to print them on the side of a cereal boxes and we played them with a needle through a paper cone – try that with a digital recording.

  2. Aaarrgghhhh! It’s siliconE !!!
Unless there’s a large slab of pre-IC crystal silicon, etched with grooves…

  3. Someone should make a web service/3d printing service out of this: Upload a song, pay x amount of money, get the 3d printed mold sent to your home.

  4. I love Shout Out Louds… this just makes them even cooler. I love it.

  5. “even cooler” – I see what you did there paryl…
