This month we’re debuting a new series, Component of the Month. Just as our Skill Builders explore core maker skills in electronics, woodworking, metalworking, and other disciplines, Component of the Month will survey fundamental electronic components we think every maker should be familiar with.

We’ll start each month with an excerpt from Charles Platt’s Encyclopedia of Electronic Components Volume 1, a superb resource for makers at all skill levels. In follow-up posts, we’ll learn more about the month’s component, with tutorials, projects, and videos.

February’s focus is that oh so fundamental of components, the switch, in all its many forms. Throughout the course of the year, we’ll also delve into batteries, resistors, relays, diodes, and other components.

We hope you find the series informative and fun. As always, we welcome your feedback.

For more on microswitches, rockers, sliders, toggles, DIPs, SIPs, paddle switches, and more, check out the Encyclopedia of Electronic Components Volume 1 by Charles Platt. It’s the informative, concise, and well-organized resource that's perfect for teachers, hobbyists, engineers, and students wanting a go-to electronics quick reference.
