ITP Camp: Arduinos and Laser Cutters, But No Tents or Bug Bites

For over 30 years, NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program “has been a hub of experimentation in art, media and technology.” A two year graduate program at Tisch School of the Arts in New York City, ITP is frequently featured on the pages of MAKE. The work that comes from the students in the the program ranges from sculptural to practical and finds new niches in between.

Every June, ITP opens its doors to working professionals for ITP Camp, where they can get a small sample of what the full program is like. According to their site, “ITP Camp is like the ITP graduate program put in the blender and smooshed into a month. It is ITP’s test kitchen, its R&D arm, its back of the napkin. It’s the place where we encourage you, our faculty, former students, colleagues, and community to experiment, challenge, and play.”

Applications for the 2013 iteration of ITP Camp are now being accepted. If you have a project that you’d like to tackle at ITP Camp, you can also apply for a fellowship. With a fellowship at ITP Camp, your admission is free and you’ll receive an honorarium to cover the cost of materials or travel. You simply need to hold at least one workshop, complete and document your project, and present your work at the end of the program.

I was lucky enough to get involved in ITP Camp last year as a counselor and in fact, that’s me giving a workshop in the photo above. The experience was absolutely fantastic. It was just the right mix of learning, collaborating, creating, and socializing. Check out the video below to see what others have to say about it:
