Oregonians: Eugene Mini Maker Faire June 15

Oregon’s second annual Eugene Mini Maker Faire is taking place this Saturday, June 15th, at the Science Factory in Alton Baker Park. The event is being collaboratively produced by the Science Factory and Eugene Maker Space. Their lineup of makers looks interesting and diverse, ranging from traditional handcrafts to tech and everything in between. Shown here are just a sampling of the makers who will be sharing their projects. Pictured above is Jack McCornack, the builder of MAX, a 60s-style roadster that gets 100mpg on diesel or vegetable oil.

The Eugene Rocketry model rocket club will be doing demo launches on the Science Factory front lawn.

Artist Steve La Riccia will be showing pieces from his Steamworks Research & Design Labs series. As an example, seen below is his Wozniak’s Conundrum, an electric/steam powered interactive assemblage that grafts a 1990s Apple Macintosh computer to a 1897 Remington Standard Model 7 typewriter to make a fully functional computer. La Riccia converted a Morse code telegraph key into a working mouse and made a 56K dial-up external modem from telephone parts.

Shoemaker Robert Walling of Babu shoes will be sharing his handcrafted shoes. From the Maker Faire site: “Although Bob pursues a traditional craft, he shares a great deal in common with the more modern technologies that we most often associate with the Maker movement. Bob operates on a ‘totally open source’ model — every aspect of his craft is in the public domain, and he is always willing to share his knowledge with those willing to learn.”

I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.
