I just interviewed Brian Greene, professor of Physics and Professor of Mathematics at Columbia University. He is author of the best selling books "The Elegant Universe", "Fabric of the Cosmos" and recently a NOVA special. His area of research is superstring theory, quantum theory of gravity as well as a unified theory of all forces and all matter. We talked about superstrings, branes, experimental ways to investigate all of this along with what tools he uses and how technology has changed the way physicists work together (they use AIM!). This will be part of our Make:Audio series to be released here soon. Brian, wants to build a telescope as a project (I've always wanted to as well). I think we're going to definitely put that in a future issue. I'd like to build my own scope, then use one of my digital cameras to take photos.

Now, this is something that makes me want to support Make and get my subscription going. I admit ignorance to the overall schema that goes into an issue of Make but Brian Greene is right up my alley.
I should say that my concern with Make is that it would be cool for a month and then devolve into endless repeats of things I've read elsewhere on the web months before they hit the magazine.

How about a Grid radio-telescope, with nodes blanketing the planet? Publish hardware / antenna / code through Make. There are some differences from other Grid applications, of course. With software you can do some interesting phased-array stuff, and a 10,000 mile telescope is pretty intriguing. Since you can watch the entire sky 24x7, multiple experiments simultaneously. On a completely banal note, my wife thinks he should be uglier: to be a child prodigy, a near pulitzer winner, and attractive is a bit much.
