In this Make audio show- we interview Rob Elam and talk about all things Biodiesel, what it is, how it's made, the efficiencies and more! Biodiesel is a clean-burning, domestically-produced fuel derived from a variety of renewable agricultural resources such as soybeans or mustard seed. It can be burned in any conventional diesel engine either in pure form or in a blend of any proportion with petroleum diesel. Biodiesel delivers equivalent engine performance while substantially decreasing harmful emissions.

Great show, I only wish we knew about the option when we purchased our VW wagen.

Does the occassional use of petro-diesel have a negative effect on the vehicle?

Rob left out an important fact about VW diesels. As far as I know VW of North America has no official policy that allows the use of biodiesel without affecting the engine waranty. And, VW of Canada only allows 5% biodiesel which to my mind is hardly worth the effort. My local dealership in California claims they have had many injection pump failures (presumably exempt from warranty) due to biodiesel use. I am reluctant to believe a word they say of course. I went all the way to Louisianna to pick up my TDI Beetle and I run petrodiesel because there is no biodiesel source less than 25 miles from me in Sunnyvale.
