Contour Crafting - 3D printing houses
Contour Crafting is a fabrication process by which large-scale parts can be fabricated quickly in a layer-by-layer fashion. The chief advantages of the Contour Crafting process over existing technologies are the superior surface finish that is realized and the greatly enhanced speed of fabrication. The success of the technology stems from the automated use of age-old tools normally wielded by hand, combined with conventional robotics and an innovative approach to building three-dimensional objects that allows rapid fabrication times. Boot Camp - Mashing for Beginners
The term "mash-up" or "bootleg" (or, more commonly, just "boot") describes the result of mixing together two or more records to create a whole new track. Though originally performed live using turntables and DJ mixers, recent advances in sequencing software have taken this art-form to a whole new level. This document outlines how mash-ups can be made using the software package Tracktion. Link.

HOW TO Fix Your iPod FireWire Cable
Is your iPod's Firewire cable coming apart at the seams? Several of my iPod cables have started to de-sheath. What about you? The easiest way to fix the dreaded Firewire cable de-coupling is to put a thin layer of Gorilla Glue on the exposed metal part of the FireWire cable being careful not to over-apply Link.

A Craftster Before His Time
Rosey Grier was a 6′ 5″ 300 pound NFL player in the 1970s whose favorite hobbie was needlepoint… and he wasn’t afraid to admit it! He even wrote a book entitled “Rosey Grier’s Needlepoint for Men.” Someone out there with a copy of this book was nice enough to scan some pages into Flickr and you can see them all here [via] [via] Link.

New things with PSP Firmware v2.0
MAKE pal C.K. Sample has a good overview of all the new things with the PSP Firmware v2.0. It looks interesting, and I'll update once I have another PSP, otherwise (for me) the web browser isn't really enough to give up all the homebrew games and applications. The coolest thing is the video/audio download and pictures via Wi-Fi, there's a ton of projects and physical space stuff you can do with that. Link.

Security researcher quits job and blows whistle on Cisco's fatal flaws
I'll find out more once I hit Vegas in the next 8 hours. Networking giant Cisco and security company Internet Security Systems filed on Wednesday a restraining order against the management of the Black Hat Conference and a security expert who told conference attendees that attackers can broadly compromise Cisco routers. BIO Urn
Bio is an urn for ashes, which transforms the ritual of death into an act of regeneration and life. It is made of compacted organic material (coconut shell) which is then covered in a layor of celulose containing organic fertiliser. Inside this there is a seed which will later germinate and grow into a tree. Thanks to the Bio-Urn graveyards would turn into forests filled with life and meaning and the end of our lives would become an act of reconcilation with nature itself. [via] Link.

Use a PSP to download podcasts...
Nice example from Dave- Well there is a new rom floating around for the Sony PSP which enables full web browsing. That being said I wanted to try out the capabilities of downloading podcasts using this new rom update. What I find amazing is that you now can download any podcast anywhere if you have your Sony PSP with you and a Wifi connection. Watch the video and be amazed... Link.

Space Telescope Could Unfold in Space
A clever new telescope design could allow engineers to pack larger folding space telescopes into smaller spaces on rockets, dramatically reducing their weight and launch costs. Inspired by amateur telescopes which can be disassembled for transport, this design could allow fleets of low cost space telescopes with bigger mirrors than Hubble. They could be used for detailed Earth observation, astronomical observations, or even be sent to other planets and moons to examine their surfaces in extreme detail. Link.

iRobot going public
We like to cover the Roomba projects here and all things robot so here's something you'll probably read here first- iRobot is going IPO! iRobot Corporation today announced that it has filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering of its common stock. This is almost as good as the news about the Roomba having an API! Link and Link.

HOW TO geotagg del.icio.us bookmarks

Awhile back we showed you how to annotate your photos with the location they were taken and then display them in Google Earth. But, photos aren't the only thing you can tag with location coordinates- you can also tag and view bookmarks from del.icio.us, the social bookmarking site. Once you tag them, you can then view in Google Earth and do a virtual tour and more! Here's how...

LED series parallel array wizard
The LED series/parallel array wizard is a calculator that will help you design large arrays of LEDs. The LED calculator was great for single LEDs--but when you have several, the wizard will help you arrange them in a series or combined series/parallel configuration. The wizard determines the current limiting resistor value for each portion of the array and calculates power consumed. All you need to know are the specs of your LEDs and how many you'd like to use. Mechanical mirrors
The 4 mechanical mirrors are made of various materials but share the same behavior and interaction; any person standing in front of one of these pieces is instantly reflected on its surface. The mechanical mirrors all have video cameras, motors and computers on board and produce a soothing sound as the viewer interacts with them. Thanks Kakkewiet! Link.

HOW TO make a "Windows Vista" (Longhorn) Auxiliary Display (now)

Earlier this year Microsoft and ASUS showed a new technology that might be baked in to future laptops, an auxiliary display, a small LCD on the outside of a laptop that can display email, battery, CPU, Wi-Fi signal and all sorts of things. It's much like the Flipstart (that hasn't shipped). I like the idea, but don't wait to wait until Windows Vista/Longhorn so here's how to make your own that's almost as good...It's also a great and cheap way to add a LCD to a PC case, this HOW TO uses the now free Konfabulator! Here's how!...
