Star Wars Galaxies is an MMO based on the Star Wars universe and takes place sometime between the events of episodes IV and V. Within the game are three basic profession categories: combat, entertainer, and crafter; with each player having enough skill points to learn and master several professional across these categories.
In the case of crafting, there are many routes one can go including specializing in armor, weapons, droids, clothing, food, starships and much more. As a profession crafting is extremely important to the game, as it boasts a player based economy and most items used are created by fellow players.
The SWG crafting system is fairly complex and requires the ability to gather resources, create prototypes or manufaturing schematics, and experiment with the stats/mod of the created item. The gathering of resources is the first step in the crafting process as each item "recipe" requires specific materials in order to be made. This how to shows you how to take that first step.

One of the things that really annoyed me about crafting in SWG was that the master artisan level crafting (which then branches into other things) enabled me to....
wait for it...
CRAFT A BIRDCAGE.
WHOA. I just spent the last few weeks clicking the same buttons over and over, fighting off annoyed beasties so I can build a flipping BIRDCAGE?
Granted, its been over a year since I played last because I just flat-out quit when I got to that point. Secondlife.com is far far more entertaining.

Jher - I hear you ;) My biggest fear is if I play secondlife I might end up losing my job - my family - and my dog. It looks way to immersive to be healthy for me /grin.

Yes Jher, as a Master Artisan in SWG you can build a birdcage. But you neglected to mention you can also craft five different types of landspeeders -- something every player needs -- as well as various types of components required by the elite crafting professions such as droid engineers and architects.
Like most games, SWG is as fun as you make it. Enjoy 2ndlife.

If you really wanna have fun building in virtual spaces, you can try www.There.com. We have a ton of user created stuff, and the cost is less than $10/yr, plus the stuff you buy.
