Neat project! I did some experiments with front wheel drive myself - though I was going for front drive/front steer rather then rear steer on a two wheel. You can see my experiments at Jake's Recumbent Bike Project's - Jake.

I have a rear wheel drive trike and am not so keen on the complexity of FWD BUT then again I don't like the long chain either. Other wise It's great fun to ride.
