Scott writes "Vonage just released a VoIP WiFi phone... you can use your Vonage VoIP account on any public WiFi access point (but not at places that charge, such as the airport, Starbucks, etc). I'd love to see this phone modded/hacked to be used with other providers (I use Voicepulse)." Link. If you use EVDO, you could at least make a mobile hotspot (see how to) but I'm not sure what settings you can change in the phone for providers (if any).

No need to hack it. This is a standard UTStarcom WiFi SIP phone.
See link:
http://www.utstar.com/Solutions/Handsets/WiFi/
If you get it from a VOIP proviced like Vonage, it will most likely have a custom firmware on it that's locked to that provider but with the standard firmware you can connect to any SIP provider. Connecting it to Voicepulse should be no problem. I have one of these talking happily to my asterisk server.
As far as I know the latest "Open" firmware for this phone is 3.10st and can be found here:

For the phone itself, just search froogle for UTStarcom F1000
Happy SIPping

Is there a WiFi phone available for Skype? I live in Philly, which will one day have Muni WiFi...at least that's the idea. I'm interested in researching the tech/ cost for providing Skype based WiFi phones for homeless & low income residents. Any ideas?
Thanks,
~jamie
