This is lame. He's taking the DTR LED signal from the modem and using it to switch on a relay [via a transistor]. He could have used a couple of resistors instead of a modem.

Yes, but I had an extra modem that I would never otherwise use and all I needed was one output. Anyway it was my *first* electronics project, about a year or two ago... lol
