Command-Tab is reviving an iPod with a ThinkPad 240 HD adapter. In his Flickr photo set you can see the start to finish of building an iPod to 2.5" hard drive adapter. Looks pretty easy to do if you have an old drive and iPod to hack up. Link.

see: http://www.command-tab.com/index.php/ipod-junior/ for detailed instructions, also has 3.5" ide to ipod details. Ebay has similar adapters but for 1.8" hd > ide, you would need a female|female adapter to make this work ide > ipod.
One of these days I will finish my ((ipod + 3.5"ide + fm transitter) all inside a cigar box) hifi component

i think i found an alternate source for the thinkpad adapter and a more complete powered ipod to 2.5 or 3.5 adaptor send me an email if your interested
