Sony isn't tops in many areas any longer, but they were one of the best in robot dogs and humanoid robot companion development. But now it seems those are getting the axe (maybe they'd open source 'em? Good will and all?!)... "Continuing the restructuring in its electronics business, the company said it would end its Aibo robot line, stop development of its Qrio robot, stop development and manufacturing of plasma televisions, and stop selling in-car entertainment products in Japan. thanks william, i think sony could erase all the bad they've put out their by open sourcing the hardware and code on the aibos and qrios, it would be a huge boom for robotics, human kind and so much more...of course, i've been trying to encourage ibm to do the same with deep blue, but i suspect all these things will just collect dust...

There is no chance of Sony making the Aibo (or anything) open source. Remember, this is the company that sued someone who hacked the Aibo to teach him new tricks under the DCMA.
Sony is about as anti-Maker as it gets -- which is a shame, because they make some nice products.
