Sony introducing a new “iPod of eBook readers…”

Craft & Design

Book-1If you’ve seen any of the MAKE presentations at conferences or MAKE fairs one of themes is usually about ebooks and the need for a great ebook reader – I use a hacked up Sony Librie from Japan (see the how-to and book creation here). The device is stunning, uses e-Ink, but sadly Sony really screwed up the roll out, DRM’ed the heck out of the device and now it looks like they’re going to try it again, in the USA. Buzz sent me this fantastic article in Business week that has a bit about Sony’s new reader, including some information about an “iTunes for books”… Link.

This thing is projected to cost over $300! For that kind of money, I could buy a new PocketPC with WiFi and Bluetooth. I could read eBooks in any number of different formats, listen to MP3s, listen to my Audible.com audiobooks, watch DivX movies and use “pocket” versions of Word and Excel!

i hear ya, but once you go eink it’s hard to go back. i have a librie that has been modded to run the english os, i bet you could find those on ebay for that much if you try hard, might be a better deal in the end, and you can make your own books. not sure if the new ones will…

We need these. My school district is trying to go to digital textbooks, trying some online and some on thumbdrives. Both aren’t working so well. Many kids just don’t get tech, and some just can’t read a lot on a screen. E-ink solves these problems by giving a lightweight, portable, and easy to use solution. As it stands, it takes a PC to do it, and the DRM on the thumbdrives mean that they can only run on Windows.

Wasn’t there some sort of Taiwanese ebook reader that was supposed to have been released a couple of months ago? Was I dreaming that?
