SNES controllers aren't as rare as, say, Vectrex controllers, but it still seems a shame to cut one up to do this. I've done something similar with an Atmel AVR microcontroller, but I didn't chop the plug off the controller. Instead, I bought a SNES cable extender (from eBay) and chopped that in half. That way, I could plug any unmodified SNES controller into the extension cable's socket and read the buttons from the AVR code.

Actually, I agree. I added an update to the post.
"Alternatively (what I did), you could use replace the SNES cable with one from something else, that way you don't need to chop up the controller. In my case I had a broken NES controller that I borrowed a cord from. It is also recommended that instead of cutting the cable you get a SNES controller extension cable and cut that up. In either case the steps are the same."

This is cool, I promptly ran down to radio shack and grabbed the parts, the hood was on clearance for $0.62 and the male DB connector was $1.89
Can't wait to put this together.
