Making 3D landscapes - real - SL CNC project

Ok, so here's the short version of what is going on - in the virtual world of Second Life there is land (you can buy it) and there are islands (called sims). These folks are taking the physical, er, virtual features of the land and making real 3D versions of them.

And the victorious march of the Taig mill continues!

(should add a link in the "related" column to my little 3D milling demo, as it's pretty much exactly what they are doing...at least in terms of milling 3D on the same make of benchtop mill...)

We did something similar at the office about ten years ago. The company made sonar systems that were used for surveying the sea-bed. My colleague returned from a trip to the Caspian sea with data from a region that looked like a small hill, but of course all we had was contour maps. He printed out the contours, cut them out, pasted them to sheets of thin polystyrene and then cut around them. Then, we glued up a stack of these polystyrene layers to make a model of the "hill". The final step was to smooth over the contours (with plaster, I think) and paint the model.
