Dale writes - "On a visit to my parents in Louisville, KY, I visited a regional state competition for the Science Olympiad where my nephew, Chase Carlson, competed and won in bridge building. His entry weighed 11.5 grams and held 32 lbs (just one pound short of the 33 lb maximum) before it broke. You can see him filling the bucket of sand, which is suspended from his trapezoid bridge. Chase will go on to the state competition, held in April, in Western KY. Those winners will go on to the National competition at the University of Indiana in May. I also watched students tossing tennis balls with a trebuchet and flying rubber-band powered airplanes that stayed aloft for a wonderfully long time."

I'm glad you guys posted this. I was in Science Olympiad back in school and it was a great experience! We had to make a 30 step Rub Goldberg device that raised flag at 20 seconds and set off a bottle rocket at the end. We also had to make our own unique instruments to play in the SO Band. Good times boys, good times.

I am in Science Olympiad! In fact, my state competition is on Saturday.

My bridge won fourth at nationals in the 1989 Science Olympiad.

Pretty cool! I was also there at the Louisville event judging the Compute This! event. I did the Science Olympiad too 12 years ago when I was in high school, but my events were orienteering and the general science quiz.
