The great LadyBug animation

We profiled Natalie Jeremijenko in MAKE 02 (toxic sensing robot dogs) - and here's some of her latest work, amazing animations showing the variety of the lady bug "200 individual labybugs selected from a population of approximately four thousand, become the frames in an animation. The ladybug images are scaled, color corrected and ordered by similarity -- with computational algorithms that are used in face recognition software -- to animate the pattern on their backs. Although idiomatic individuals are usually used to represent a species (e.g. Adoburn Guide), seeing the range and diversity within the category has historically been underrepresented.
