Excellent idea. The sock can actually suck up a lot of the sound quality of a vocal though, so my suggestion is switching to a stocking. I made a very effective pop filter using a coat hanger and part of my wife's stockings. I gave her a couple of bucks for a new pair. Don't want feet smell when you're recording those vocals you know.
Basically I cut the foot off of the stocking, made a 6 inch circle (ring) on one end of the coat hanger and pulled the stocking over the ring until it was taut. I fastened it around the bottom with a ziptie. The other end of the coat hanger was wrapped into a coil around the microphone stand. You may need to tape it if it tends to slip. The pop filter was easily positionable at the end of the flexible coat hanger bar.
The one I made is thinner than the traditional pop filter, but the stocking worked perfectly at reducing wind bursts to the microphone. Keep it at least 4-5 inches from the mic or it may not be as effective, depending on how sensitive your mic is. You could always work in some kind of spacer to further separate the two panels of stocking material.
