Faberge eggs are likely what you're thinking of. I don't think they're made out of real eggs, though. If they are made from eggs, though, I'm even more impressed at the skill it took to make them.

What DGary is talking about is pysanky , or Ukrainian Easter eggs, as featured on the MAKE:Blog prior to Easter.
And I'd bet it wouldn't be too hard to replace the pen holder with a kistka holder. Then all you'd have to work out is a method of feeding beeswax to the kistka.
For me this sounds a whole lot more doable than creating pysanky with the traditional methods.
