HOWTO: Decorate Your Headphones

Irene Headphones
MAKE friend and podcaster Irene McGee from NoOne's Listening shares with us her HOWTO on decorating headphones to make them more funky and full of personality. Take it away Irene!

Decorate Your Headphones:
Headphones fall into the not so cute category and everyone dresses up their laptops and their ipods but the one computer apparatus meant to be physically worn on our head - the headphone - are rarely decorated. And after a few failed attempts I understand why they actually ARE difficult to decorate with all the leather and curves (can't just get a glue gun and go to town). Plus headphones get pulled on and off your head while you work so durability comes into play. The ears are the easiest part to decorate.

What you need:

  • Headphones with the ear made from leather or fabric of some sort.
  • Find a yard of cool border fabric boa, lace, something with fuzzy texture. I opted for pink thin boa.
  • Needle and thread

Headphones Close-1

Simply sew (nothing even fancy) in and out like you learned in 7th grade home economics class. Bam! 15 minutes later you have styled out your headphones.

If you want to cover the plastic surface area of your headphones be forewarned that if you mess up with a glue and or sticky like substance you will not be able to fix the surface... Ie there is no going back so be really careful once you get into using the sticky stuff.

Headphones Side

The plastic surface of the headphones are circular so trying to stick cool sticker paper will not work because the sticky paper will get bunchy. I know this because I tried. Instead opt for cool super small stickers OR as I did get tiny jewels with sticker backs. You can bling out your headphones!!!

Irene Work

Total cost around $15 plus whatever your headphones cost. Totally worth it now though because everyone will ask you where you got your rad headphones from. And then you can say I made them and then you can say I make other
things too. Give a seductive wink AND now you've parlayed your headphone décor skillz into a date.

Headphones Kitty
Even kitty loves them!
