MIDAS: Homemade Dorm Room Home Automation System

Barbara writes - "A couple of freshman roomates at MIT set up a full-fledged dorm room automation system, complete with voice activation, web control, touch screen controllers, a security system, fingerprint scanner, automatic blinds, screens with news feeds, etc, all actuated by a central "MIDAS" controller which they built and wrote the code for. Pretty cool stuff. Probably the best part of the system is the "party mode" which will turn the entire room into an instant rave with the touch of a big red emergency stop button." Tons of videos and how they made it on the site - Link.

I always had aspirations like this for my dorm room, but it never happened. Really impressive work.

Great dorm room. I'd expect nothing less from the fine folks at MIT.
Times change! Back in 1973 the best hack we had was a telephone 'black box' for making free long distance calls. Ma Bell was always sniffing around for these hacks, but we always seemed to sneak it past them.
Interestingly enough the 'box' was actually a tin Sucretes throat lozenge box, the precursor to the Altoids box.
