These are fun little projects, but for anyone interested in building one, especially as "good projects to learn from", just use a microcontroller.
The shchematic above could be replaced by a 6-pin IC, the button, the LEDs, and the battery. The educational value will also be much higher since microcontrollers are the way to do anything these days, you're better off learning to use them, even from the beginning.
