DIY GPS logger

Momnopole writes "In the current spate of discussions about GPS loggers I'm surprised you haven't mentioned SparkFun's kit. It not only provides a cheap kit for logging GPS to standard SD cards in a package smaller than a credit card but it also directly writes Keyhole Markup Language (.KML) files which may be instantly viewed on google earth without processing (check out the demo)..." - Link.

You'd be right to be surprised if they hadn't mentioned this kit, but this was the first datalogger I saw on make blog:
http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2006/03/39_gps_logger.html

Since the old blog article says $40 and SFE now says $60, it looks like the price has gone up recently.

Anyway, from the page you linked to "This is the board only. You will need to purchase the Lassen iQ, GPS Antenna, battery, and SD card seperately."

Those extra parts are around $80 making which make this a fairly expensive option and it will need a very large enclosure compared to the other cheaper options.

Ya. this thing seems too pricey for what it does. And whats the deal with the pic? Does it take quarters too? WTF!

Sparkfun has a quarter in most of their pictures to give an idea of the scale.

That unit from SFE is excellent! I packaged one in a waterproof case and use it for recording kayak and boat jaunts... photo and the track from a sailboat sea trial are over here.

Cheers,
Steve

OK, the price may be rather high, but it can really log a huge interval depending on the card.
