I've gotten great results with reel to reel tape players, like the Wilcox-Gay Recordio pictured here. BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE HIGH VOLTAGES CONTAINED WITHIN! Death is possible! Sometimes these have input jack, other times you have to tap into the tape head.
Pair it with a vintage speaker, and voila! Here I've used an old Realistic speaker that actually had a teak cabinet. I did replace the driver inside the cabinet. " - Link.
