MP3 headphones

With all the sub-$20 MP3 players out there, you can make your own MP3 player headphones with everything built in, MAKE Flickr photo pool member Csc934 writes - "Stephen needed a better way to listen to music on his run. There are no cables to tangle and it runs on a single AA battery. The mp3 player is a bit skimpy on memory, but it was affortable at around $20. It has usb jack for power and 1/8" stereo to the headphones. The usb port came off an old macintosh computer." - Link.

HOW TO - DVR with automatic commercial skip

Here's a handy Instructable on making an auto-commerical skipping DVR using SageTV, Vielmetter writes - "I hate commercials...especially the repetative ones on my favorite shows like Law & Order and the Jon Stewart show. I've spent a long time customizing my DVR, but I've finally got it to automatically skipp any and all commercials on my favorite shows. So now its time I share my work with the rest of the world so anyone can enjoy tv without annoyances." - Link.

The Monkey Arm - DIY Clamp tripod

Anko writes - "I truly detest carring around a tripod unless I know I'm going to need it. However, I do find myself needing an extra level of stability quite often. To solve the problem I threw together this, The Monkey Arm. The Monkey Arm consists of a length of Locline with a clamp epoxied on one end and a quarter twenty screw on the other. Locline is a modular hose system used predominantly in salt water aquarium tanks." - Link.

Turbo PC - Project forced induction

Mark has a crazy PC mod, he writes - "We thought a fast computer should have hot rod flames, working headlights, and a custom license plate. As for the cooling system, an LED case fan just wasn't going to be original enough. Instead, our case fan is a turbocharger commonly found on late 1990's Mitsubishi Eclipses and Eagle Talons." Scan barcodes with your web cam

I've always liked Delicious Library for the Mac (you can scan in any book, movie, music, or video game, the application grabs the data, and puts it on your "shelf) - but, Barcodepedia (cross platform) is all web based, so - you could potentially have online communities of folks sharing/trading etc. Might also be an easy way to get stuff up on ebay, just scan and post...
"Barcodepedia.com is a community based online barcode database. The database is completely free to use, and everyone is welcome to contribute. Although it is possible to create a user on Barcodepedia, you can use the entire homepage without one. Originally the page was named barcoder which was a tech demo of of the new possibilities in flash 8, but due to a large interest in the subject the current more community minded homepage was developed." - Link.

Put put boats

Csc934 writes - "The put put boat is a steam powered boat. In this use, they are hand made from either baking pan aluminum or flashing. The boiler is made by cutting and flattening a soda can, folding it, then epoxying in two straws." [via] - Link.

$6 Solar fan

Saites2001 writes "Recently I saw a commercial for a car vent that ran on solar power. It seemed like a good idea, but outrageously overpriced. The one on TV was $15 + S&H. Online they run as high as $40. I decided I could build one that was more functional and for under $10. The outcome is not exactly a looker, but it works and only cost $6." - Link.

MacBook Pro Biometrics
.jpg)
Not sure what exactly is going on with this mod, but it looks like Edahc added a Sony FIU-600 fingerprint scanner to a 2.16 Ghz MacBook Pro by cutting a hold in the keyboard panel and soldering in the fingerprint scanner. Pretty sure you loose a USB port if you do that... [via] - Link.

How Sparklers Are Made

Pat sent in this timely "how its made video" enjoy! - "...Sparklers are probably one of the most popular items for kids of all ages in celebrating Independence Day. This six and a half minute video tells a great story of Diamond Sparkler, an American company that fought back against illegal trade practices by China -- and won. Yes, it shows how sparklers are made, too, along the way. "The symbol of American freedom", they call sparklers in this video, and that's probably true. Here is a plant of 150 people in Youngstown, Ohio that uses 200 tons of wire per year (and this is really skinny wire, remember, so 200 tons of it is a lot of wire) and makes a million and a half sparklers every two and a half days. This is a fun video and a great story as well. We think you'll enjoy it." - Link.
