In the 50's and 60's John T. Frye, W9EGV / Popular Electronics published a series of fiction stories called "The Carl and Jerry stories" - In each story the pair acquired new skills, got their ham radio licenses and used their knowledge of electronics to get out of a jam or solve a mystery - there isn't a complete collection of all the stories that I know of, but there are some scans / text online. The stories are entertaining, fun and I can imagine how many engineers, scientists and Makers got their start from reading these wonderful tales - about & index.

Wow, did that ever bring back some pleasant memories from my long ago youth. Carl and Jerry were my heroes. I started reading every issue of Popular Electronics when I was 11 and I got a subscription. I got my ham license shortly thereafter. I still have the same call sign 48 years later.
Maybe that's one reason I like "Make". I built a number of interesting projects from those old PE's and "Make" sure reminds me of that.

I don't know if it would be possible to re-create the Carl and Jerry stories today.
They just don't come up with lines like:
"Oh, fine! I didn't know we had one!" ejaculated Carl.
While talking about tele tattletales anymore.
