RSSPhonograph turntable strobe zootrope
Tim shows you how to use an old phonograph turntable and strobe light to display 2 and 3d animated artworks - Link.
At the Exporatorium in SF they have a display like this by artist Toshio Iwai, and it's really fun to watch.

A fantastic implementation of this approach in 3d featuring characters from My Neighbor Totoro is part of the animation exhibit at the Studio Ghibli museum (the studio led by supreme anime master Hayao Miyazaki):

The strobe doesn't sync well with the movie frame rate, but you can get a general idea of what is going on.
