yeah man, that thing is giving me the jitters. I can just see the blade flying off and cutting someone's hand off

I'd add a belt guard, a momentary switch on the handle and modify the table a bit to include a stop on the back. Otherwise if used with proper respect it looks like a decent tool.

Why the fear? Besides polish, the only difference between this tool and the commercial offerings is that with the commercial you (or your next of kin) have a company to sue if the tool malfunctions or you make a mistake.

As Hammerthumb notes, the saw is not fundamentally different from any other abrasion cut-off saw. There are many commercial versions available.
The only differences are
a) there's a full guard around the belt, as I recommended in the notes,
b) there's a double sided guard around the cut-off disk, and
c) there is a spring or some other mechanism to keep the cutter in the 'up' position by default.
These are all easy modifications.
The machines I've posted were all made by a depression-era, do-it-yourself guy who grew up on a farm. Safety was not necessarily his strong suit.
