The Neverwas Haul @ Burning Man 2006

Howdy Makers, just getting back in saddle from Burning Man 2006, an arts festival held for 8 days in Nevada on the playa of the Black Rock Desert with 40,000 people, many of them Makers. In fact, besides the ticket price, the other requirement that seemed to be present was the Maker spirit. I've never been there, but being in the Bay Area for some of this year (San Francisco, CA, USA) and having Maker Faire in early 2006 meant attendance was almost required - many of our Makers, friends and their projects make the yearly journey to this temporary city constructed in the middle of nowhere. Each year there's a new theme, this year was "HOPE AND FEAR: THE FUTURE" - fitting for these times it seems huh? We'll have a few posts on the MAKE blog with photos and projects as they hit our inbox and download from our cameras, but it's hard not to mention the high water mark of the days and nights I spent out there - riding around the playa, touring the various art projects, homemade art cars, costumes and surreal landscape on a 3 story Victorian house, "The Neverwas Haul" being pulled by a fully operational 1920's steam engine, it was completely out of this world, from a time and place that only exists now in the past, but it seemed oddly futuristic, and that future... is steam powered.
