This has been a good week so far for things that hover... Here are some hoverboard plans, for $39 - the usual caveat here, I have no idea if they're good, so if a Maker out there has built, or plans to build one let us know... - "The hoverboard uses high performance hovercraft technology to lift a 200+lb rider 1 inch above the ground. A 6 horsepower 4-stroke gasoline engine spins a multi bladed propeller to force air under the craft.

A special flexible skirt (which acts like an air bag) is used to help trap air under the craft to increase efficiency. There is a slight gap between the flexible skirt and the surface while it's hovering. When hovering, the craft is virtually friction free and only requires a small thrust to move at high speeds. The craft hovers best over smooth flat surfaces. " [via] - Link.

I've built a couple models of hovercrafts on 2 stroke engines that can lift 200+ pounds. I think this is a true waste of a 4-stroke engine. The "special air bag" can be a tarp. I think there's better things to do with $39 than to buy plans

Agreed,

just looking at that picture you can figure out where your feet go, where the engine is attached and where the fan (I mean high precision propeller) should go.

Now Abyzaran should be nice enough to document one of his hovercraft project for Make :)

Bogus!! These guys have been selling scam plans for anti-gravity, radar jammers, psionics and all kinds of garbage for some years now.

Looking at the prices on their website for plans and completed boards, these guys have been sniffing gas fumes. $9,000 for a cobbed together hoverboards? ("All we have to do is find *one* sucker...").

C'mon, Make...you can do better.

while this design is cool and all... I wouldn't support them because as said, they sell scams. I actually ordered something from them a long time ago -- just out of curiosity of what they offer. I got a zip file filled with public domain documents, most of which I already saw...

Oh, their jet pack thing was on Mythbusters... If the designs in there are any indication of quality - they do piss poor documentation.

this would be insanely hard to control. on a skateboard you have the wheels that control the direction, imagine a skateboard that you have to push precisely forward or you start sliding sideways. not fun.

oh yeah, not to mention curbs or anything not relatively uniform (i wonder how much air would hemmorage from riding on asphalt)

I have built a hover craft that lifts 8 inches off the ground with a leafblower and I used the plans for that and made a hoverboard. Contrary to what has been posted hoverbards are very easy to control you just lean the way you want to go and it moves there.

try useing the eularian grid for a power source
not as bulky but more hight as well as more speed
