Make your video game for the Xbox 360 with XNA game studio express...

Casey @ brains-N-brawn.com (one of my favorite sites) reminds us that if you're a developer you can write off the purchase for gaming gear... - "this vid of an XNA racer demo gave me goose bumps. and don't forget that XNA is the developers excuse for writing off 360 and HDTV purchases ..." - Link.

Pictured here, video from Kotaku - Xbox 360 community game developed using the XNA development kit.

I think it's actually on page 83.

Cool video, though.

The thing that bothers me about all of this is that it will get people locked into using unportable Microsoft technology. If you don't thoroughly abstract everything, you'll never get your games running on any other system. With the lack of backwards compatibility in upcoming DirectX versions, this very possibly excludes computers running less-than-latest versions of MS operating systems as well.

I think they are offering a unique direct distribution channel, akin to Valve's Steam (insert personal gripe story here)

Anyways, at the moment we're looking at Torque, from GarageGames which will have the option (hopefully) if needed, to go through Torque X and port to XBox - IF we wanted to...

At least with Torque there is a huge network of support and the distribution channel that seems much more open then anything coming out of somethign Xbox/MSDN related (old history with MSDN through prior work experience)

What's funny is hearing the XNA/360 guy basically saying, "Open source is awesome, and its process is a great way to make great software." What's not funny is that you have to pay $99/year for the privelege of creating content for their closed platform.
