The reverse makes more sense. For the way shown (putting the pencil in the drill chuck), it would be faster and easier to sharpen the pencil by hand than load the pencil in the chuck.

Of course for the reverse one...it's more cumbersome than a battery powered sharpener you can buy for the same price.

I've actually been doing this for a long time. I also use my drill as a lathe of sorts, chucking the piece I want to turn into the drill, then using a dremel with a cutoff disc as my tool to work the piece down. It works in a pinch.

How about simply using a bit of sandpaper or a file instead of a shop-bought pencil sharpener? After all, you can normally find a drill and the pencil, but a sharpener? "Used one years ago, know it's around here somewhere, unless it's not."
