Radar has a list of the top worst toys of all time, but I think a couple of them are actually the best… My favorite is the Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab, it just sold for almost $8k at an auction too!

I had something similar- at least it strongly resembled part of the Glbert kit. It was a Wilson diffusion cloud chamber that came with a tiny alpha source. Maybe it was another Gilbert kit? I also had the Mattel science kits- what a great set of toys they were!

There aren’t many science toys today that let a kid really explore science.

I *love* the fact that this comes in a faux snakeskin case! That would require one big snake — at least 6 inches in diameter.

You can still order spinthariscopes (as found in the kit) — I’ve been itching to get one for a long time: http://www.unitednuclear.com/spinthariscope.htm

“It’s unclear what effects the Uranium-bearing ores might have had on those few lucky children who received the set, but exposure to the same isotope–U-238–has been linked to Gulf War syndrome, cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma, among other serious ailments.”
