Google patent search

Jordan sent in the new Google patent search, for years and years folks have complained about the USPTO's search and it looks like Google just figured out what needed to be done, works great. It's a lot of fun to look up how some of the things we all use work, or just random items for when you're building projects, a lot of the solutions are out there... - Link.

As far as I understand it, if I restrict my search to anything filed earlier than December 1989, I can legally build, and even sell that device?

Can anyone confirm this for me?

haha, search for fart and you will notice that the text recognition has replaced a few "parts" for "farts", makes for some amusing titles.

paulsw, utility patents do indeed expire after 20 years or so. However, some of them expire early due to failure to pay maintenance fees. Google's patent search is very nice indeed but if you want expired patents as published in the uspto gazette then go here. In the true maker spirit,I *made* this website myself and I shamelessly plug it. It's free and there's no advertising (yet).
