Massively over-engineered brilliance.

Of course, he could have just left the tube at a fairly steep angle and put butter halfway down. The mouse would have entered the tube, hit the butter and slid to the bottom, and remained there.

But that wouldn't make a great story.

Noel the field mouse soon after had a companion (Carol) who we kept for a month or so. We don't think they were 'digging' domestication, so I released them in some woods nearby with a healthy cache of peanuts to tide them over.

A Rudolf, Tinsel and Humbug were also caught which ended that current mouse incursion.

I have a pretty bad rat infestation in my allotment shed at the moment so who knows; there may be a 'Better Rat Trap' story next year.
(...unfortunately this may not have such a happy ending...for the rats that is).
