You can learn to solder with any one of the irons Radio Shack sells. If you can master this, you will be able to solder anything to anything else with a "good" iron. I wouldn't be surprised if you could solder stainless steel to wood if you master the RS irons.

If you want to avoid a major headache and just want to solder, get a real iron. Metcal, Hakko, or even Weller. There are deals to be had on eBay for used equipment that is several orders of magnitude better than anything RS sells. Once you use these, you will never go back! No more filing cheap copper tips.
