YouMail - customized voicemail

A MAKE reader writes -

"This is one of the coolest things I've done with my cell phone in a while. YouMail is essentially a replacement voice mail for your cell phones. Among many features, it allows you to record unique voice greetings for anyone who calls you, based on their caller ID. You can also check your voice messages like normally do, but also via the web like Vonage. They also have a "ditchmail" feature that hangs up on unwanted callers after your custom greeting for them is played. Now THAT's cool. It works with all the carriers except Sprint and it's free. " - Link.

I've heard about this from a few folks and it also appeared in the latest Popular Science, so it's likely worth trying out. If anyone uses it and loves/hates it post up in the comments.

i've used this service for several months, and i love it. it did go down once for a few hours, but beyond that, it's been flawless. i set up specail messages for close friends and they love it when they call and hear the message. it's also good if you like to leave silly messages, but don't want everyone who calls to hear it. it can notify you of messages via sms, and/or e-mail, you can log in and listen to the messages or listen to them right in the e-mail notice they send. the only drawback is you don't know you have a message unless you let it send you a text since the voicemail doesn't go through your cell provider, and if you don't have an unlimited text plan, that could suck. but overall, it rules.

I started using this service a few months back as well, I was actually using it before I had unlimited texting, I just turned off the text notifications and it was fine. Now that I have unlimited text it is great because they will send you a text telling you you have a message, when it was from, who it was from and how long it is. (My mother leaves some incredibly long voicemails)The personalized messages are the best, especially the "ditchmail" feature that lets you play a greeting for someone and then hangs up on them! Great way to get rid of bad dates or obsessive exs.
