Crazy! I just (literally just) bought a gas mask just like that for cheap at a surplus store :P

If the filter has been used, it may have nasty chemicals still in the filter. The dangers are different for each chemicals but as a general rule wear a mask, gloves and perform in a well ventilated area, preferably outside. That way if there are any nastyness the sunlight will destroy it in a few minuets.
