In this little proof-of-concept I was eager to try out if I could swap the Microdrive inside an iPod mini for a Compact Flash-card. These cards are getting bigger and cheaper by the day so my idea was, if this works out, we have a great way of extending the life of this little MP3-player.

An impressive and cool hack, especially if your mini's hard drive were to die.
This reminded me of a parallel universe / joke 'hack' for the nano:

I wonder if this can be done and the big ipods, i have a dead one around & I would love to CF it.

I posted an update/add-on to this project. Same mod, but now with 8GB instead of 4GB.

flash based iPod mini update, now up to 8GB!
