Awhile back, a reader asked what the MAKE Digital Edition is and what the links in the blog posts do if you're a MAKE subscriber, so here's a quick screencast/video I made. You can view it here or get the MP4.
MAKE Digital Edition is a vivid replica of the print edition of MAKE, it offers an experience very much like the print magazine plus many additional benefits, such as online searching, embedded multimedia, and printing. Please note that MAKE Digital Edition can be viewed from any web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari etc.) and requires NO DOWNLOADING of software (it's not a DRM'ed PDF--just a log in and password), giving you instant access to your entire MAKE collection. Sadly, makers are not idiots, I guess it's hard making a digital edtion 'maker safe' though I'd say most of us take such pride in your magazine that we'd rather pay for it. Keep up the awsome work, I love you guys !

i don't think it's a big deal if someone prints the screen when they forward an article - we're OK with that, if someone really wants MAKE and for some reason just can't get it, borrow it, or whatever-it, they can also email me. i don't recall ever saying no to anything reasonable :)

So when/how can we transfer MAKE to our gadget of choice? Sony E-reader? Creative Zen Vision? etc?

rjones - you can "print" the pages as a PDF now and read them on anything that supports PDF (sony reader).
what other formats are you looking for?

The interesting thing I've found with the digital edition is that the source images vary hugely in size and format... the images for Make05 total about 160mb whereas most others are around 50mb... they are all named as PNG files [makevol5_0004.png etc] but most are actually GIF images]...
I have wondered about the general MAKE attitude to grabbing them... It's a little fiddly and time consuming to do so I see it as hurdle only the very keen subscribers could be bothered doing.
I definitely love and protect my home made PDFs. I see them as a vital part of my subscription. I do not share them.

Why can't we just download the PDF versions so we can read them offline. Nuts And Volts uses the same online browser (Texterity) and you can download their magazine, so why not MAKE?

super_J - you can, just hit print and the pages can be sent / saved as a PDF.
i just went to the nuts and volts texterity pages, i didn't see a PDF link, but i don't have a subscription log/pass on this computer.
on their site they say..
No downloads or special software required
• A "clickable" table of contents
• Links that take you straight to advertiser's websites and relevant information sources
• Completely searchable text
• Fast view - loads articles quickly
how/what/where do they do this?
you can email a screenshot and i can also log in later and check...

I'm one of those weird people who like to but Make from the newsstand, because I'm not fond of torn, wet, dirty magazine delivered by our glorious USPS.
Yes, I actually pay more for the stuff. And yes, I get less benefit because I can't get access to the digital edition (and no, I'm not gonna pay twice for the same thing in different format)
Oh the injustice!
But still, since I would just like a PDF I can download and view offline, I don't feel too bad :)

I wanted to post this a while back ( it does entail the digital format) being a subscriber i can use my login to view the digital version --- cool.
i lent a few of my past mags that i bought off the newsstand #3 #4 #5 to my neighbors (thought they might like it and then subscribe to make) -- now have since lost them !!!
i wanted to look back at these volumes online but got a message wanting me to become a premier maker--- did that but still can't view the volumes that were lost!!!
any help would be great!!!

Sorry to comment on something so old, but when printing to PDF, there is a white border around the created page.
This border is a bothersome waste of space when trying to read the PDFs on my Nokia N810.
Have we devised a new way to export directly into the basic .gif form, or how can I export to a border-less PDF?
