Seems a little unfair. If you have access to make something "spectacular" you have a shot at it. So it boils down to whoever has the most money to build the brightest shiniest toy wins.
If it's a contest, why not just have people fill out the standard form, and allow them to enter. At least that way, it's not nepotism for the favoured few who manage to impress.

Tercero- that's not true, you just needs make something.
look at LED throwies, costs less than a $1 or so and that was a HUGE project that has even won awards.
i like that you need to make something to win as opposed to random lottery stuff.

I agree with Tercero on this one. A person could spend a lot of time and effort making a good instructable that only appeals to a limited audience, and wouldn't have much chance of winning.
Also, those with more resources and skills can make the "flashier" projects that get the attention.
While I think its great that people are asked to make a legitimate instructable, it would seem a lot more fair if all legitimate submissions were entered into a drawing.
