Spamtrap

Port Main 131
Add Bill's "Spamtrap" to the DIY/Art shredder collection

"Spamtrap" is an interactive installation piece the prints, shreds and blacklists spam email. It interacts with spammers by monitoring several email addresses I have created specifically to lure in spam. I do not use these email addresses for any other communication. I post individual email addresses on websites and online bulletin boards that cause them to be harvested by spambots and then to start receiving spam.

What a gratuitous and pointless waste. You've turned electronic garbage into physical garbage. Congratulations.

That's not garbage, it's art. Nice work.

Obviously that's what he did. But pretend you're looking at it as an art installation (that's what it is). Maybe the artist is commenting on how it becomes easy to ignore electronic garbage and manifesting it physically reminds us that garbage is garbage. Of all the stupid posts on Make:Blog, yours is the only one that has inspired me to respond. Congratulations to you.

Let's face it, most art is a waste - in material terms. Another use of art is to make a statement to cause thought and controversy, that's what this artist did. It inspired 4 people now to think and post a comment. Could the artist have done it differently? Maybe paint an image of the waste instead? Would it of had the same effect on Kynetx? Who is to judge... BUT... what we should do is respect one another's opinions - Zero, You should not have called Kynetx's comment stupid.

cye- You're right, I shouldn't have been so harsh. It was just an honest reaction to an opinion I still refuse to respect.

It's interesting that Zero appears to be criticizing Kynetx's close-mindedness while demonstrating the very same quality.

With regards to this art, i have a mixed reaction to it myself. I do respect this person's talent, imagination, and ability to make this happen, and think what they have accomplished is actually pretty cool...in theory. The fact that it exists and actually produces stuff though does inspire the same reaction in me that it did in Kynetx.

Oh, and zero, I think you one-upped your friend by motivating me not just to post, but to create an account.

It needs a burn bucket at the bottom so no one can read the shreds

One could use a line of reasoning to observe that the artist is pointing out the benefit and advantage of spam!

Is it not a blessing that e-garbage DOESN'T create the waste that this artwork does?

@Trepegroupie#1- you said this so well I need to repeat it for those that missed, and may agree with it:

Why that applies to so much 'art'.....and what a diplomatic way to say it!!!!!!!!

You know... after thinking about this and reading the comments my language is a bit harsh. I still think it's silly, but it DID get a reaction out of me.
You guys are pretty sharp for that early in the morning (PDT).
