Someone with this level of technical skills should surely be able to interface with one of them mp3 decoder ICs from sparkfun. What use does a MIDI player have today?

What use does a MIDI player have today?
First off, this is actually a player AND recorder. Secondly, apart from the obvious musical applications, MIDI can also be used as a generic automation system to control just about anything. And finally -
does the world really need yet another mp3 player? (j/k)
